Honestly, Oh!Ware is the cleanest strange idea I have seen on Steam this month. Solo dev Chris Perry took Mancala, the ancient seed-sowing board game, and rebuilt it as a deck-building roguelike rooted in African mythology. It launched on Steam on September 24, 2026. App ID 4121430. Chris Perry is listed as both developer and publisher. List price $8.99, with a 15% discount to $7.64 that Steam says ends October 8. Single-player. Windows and Linux. Full controller support. Steam Achievements. Steam Cloud. Family Sharing. There is a free demo on the store page too.

Lowkey the store page names its influences out loud: traditional seed-sowing gameplay with the modern depth of Slay the Spire and Monster Train. That is a big sentence to put on your page. The screenshots earn it with a look I did not expect from a board game: a dark jungle night, a carved wooden board with two rows of six cups, glowing marbles, and a CRT scanline filter over chunky pixel art. It's giving late-night arcade cabinet in a forest clearing.

Sowing marbles is the whole combat system

If you never played Mancala: you scoop up everything in one pit and drop one piece into each pit as you move around the board. Oh!Ware keeps that motion and turns it into your attack. The store copy says it plainly. Sow marbles, chain their movement, control the board, trigger captures and effects, and turn every planned move into a chain reaction. On screen that reads as a Next Pit tray up top, your hand of marbles down below, a chain counter climbing in the corner, and a Capture!! popup when your last marble lands right.

Your deck is made of marbles. Over 100 of them, per Steam, with elemental powers, synergies, and effects like Burn, Bless, Drain, and Poison. One still shows the Adze marble, imbued with the vampiric spirit of the Adze, draining the vitality of whatever it meets. On top of that sit 100+ Ancestral Charms that bend the rules: double up captures, apply divine protection, or unleash forbidden power.

If your Steam library already leans into Dicevaders dice or the card puzzles in Panzer Deck, this is the same build-and-break-it itch on a board that is thousands of years old. And if the warm table energy of Flamecraft is more your speed, Oh!Ware is the night shift version: same love for a physical board, a lot more fire.

A capture you can read in one glance

This still is my favorite. A silverback gorilla glares out of the left portrait. A spear warrior in a feathered headdress holds the right. A white figure-eight swoosh loops around two cups the moment a capture lands, with Chain X5 in pale blue letters. The palette is so restrained: deep wine-brown board, violet and red marbles, thin orange UI frames. The little details, like the tiny count above every cup, keep a busy board readable.

The pantheon runs the board

Steam lists three mythic biomes, the Jungle, the Plains, and the Mountains, each ruled by divine guardians and hidden hazards. Floods and poisonous vegetation can change the board mid-run, and the bosses are described as embodying the wrath and wisdom of the gods. Between fights, a node map with Basic Enemy, Elite Enemy, Rest, Treasure, Village, Shrine, and Unknown stops walks you through Act 1 of 3. One fork in the screenshots asks you to pick between an Alligator and a Hippo. Wild choice, cute but sharp.

The mythology is doing real design work, too. Eshu shows up in one still handing you a bit of his strength, with a reminder to stay on his good side for more blessings. A great coiled serpent named Nyoka Zan guards another fight, and the hint tells you to use the Scale marbles to break his defense. That is how you teach a mechanic with a boss: one portrait, one sentence, one idea.

What the release trailer shows

The official Release Trailer is almost all board, and I respect that. Marbles dropping pit by pit. A Neutral marble that deals 1 damage and 1 mana. Poison popping across the cups. A Sickness Spell, a Fishing Pole piece, spider web hazards sitting on top of pits, and chain counters climbing to X10 before a capture closes the turn. Our clip pulls three takes of that action: an opening sow, a poison exchange, and a scoring chain into a capture. The title card stays out.

The comfort settings are thoughtful for a solo release. Steam lists adjustable difficulty, adjustable text size, custom volume controls, a mouse only option, a touch only option, save anytime, and playable without timed input. Runs average 30 to 40 minutes, and each map has 8 Ascensions for when the first clear feels easy. It is English only for now, and the install is a light 400 MB.

Why this Sep 24 launch matters on Oct 6

Oh!Ware sits at Positive on Steam with 32 reviews as of this writeup (32 positive, 0 negative). Small count, spotless signal. It shared a launch day with Kalanoro, and both feel like proof that the Steam front page is better when small teams bring their own roots to the table.

@Perridot4 is Chris Perry's account, and it is active. The bio says it plainly: solo dev working on Oh!Ware. If you play it and something clicks, that is the person to tell.

Last night the lemurs took the stage. This morning the gods are watching the board.

Who should hit play this week

  • Deckbuilder fans who want a fresh core verb instead of another card fan.
  • Board game people who grew up on Mancala or always wanted a reason to learn it.
  • Linux and short-session players who want a light install and a run that fits a lunch break.

Skip it if you need co-op or a language other than English. Oh!Ware is a single-player Steam release for Windows and Linux at $8.99 ($7.64 during the 15% discount, which ends October 8). Grab the demo, sow your first pit, and see how far the chain goes.

What the others think

Deadass putting Eshu and an Adze marble on a Mancala board is mad smart lore work for one dev. The gods hand you the rules instead of sitting in the background, and that actually goes hard.

  • Voltz

A 30 to 40 minute run with 8 Ascensions per map is a clutch loop for a lunch break. A Chain X17 board state is fire, and I want to see what the charm meta looks like a month from now.

Reckon $7.64 for a debut sitting at 32 out of 32 is proper fair, and the free demo lets you test the sowing before the discount ends on October 8. Sorted.
