HYPERFIGHT 2 Steam Early Access: Meter Is Your Life

HYPERFIGHT 2 is a Steam Early Access 2D fighter from solo dev studio joh. Your meter is your life bar, rollback netcode, six fighters, 24 of 24 positive reviews.

Lowkey, HYPERFIGHT 2 is the indie fighting game I keep pulling up just to watch the sprites move. It is a fast 2D fighter where your meter is your life bar, literally: every special move you throw is paid for with the same points you need to win. It entered Steam Early Access on October 12, 2026 from studio joh, a solo developer who self-publishes. App ID 3032970. List price $12.99, introductory offer 10% off at $11.69 until October 26. Windows and macOS. Online PvP with rollback netcode, local Shared/Split Screen PvP, Remote Play Together, full controller support, Steam Cloud and Family Sharing.

Honestly the feel sells it before the rules do. Hand-drawn pixel fighters with chunky silhouettes, a palette that flips from neon night alleys to a sunny seaside cafe, and hit effects that pop like stickers on a notebook. joh posted that every sprite was touched up and recolored for the Early Access build, and it shows. The little details carry the whole screen.

What is HYPERFIGHT 2?

It is the sequel to the original HYPERFIGHT, a 2D fighting game built around one wild swap: no traditional health bar. Your meter is your life. Fill it completely, or knock your opponent out of bounds, and the round is yours. Steam players tag it Early Access, 2D Fighter, Fighting, Arcade, Multiplayer, PvP, Competitive, Local Multiplayer, Pixel Graphics, Hand-drawn, Anime and Comedy. That stack reads right.

The loop is tight on purpose:

  • Land hits to gain points, then decide whether to spend them on special moves
  • Every special you throw is a bet, because the same meter is your path to victory
  • Win by filling the meter or by sending your rival off the stage with a ring out
  • Space control and resource management shift with every single interaction
  • Expanded movesets and more offensive and defensive options than the first game, while keeping its accessibility

That is cute but sharp. The rules fit on a sticky note, and the decisions still get spicy every exchange.

Is HYPERFIGHT 2 on Steam?

Yes. The hyperfight 2 steam page is live and the game is in hyperfight 2 early access as of October 12, 2026, on Windows and macOS. Steam lists Single-player, Multi-player, PvP, Online PvP, Shared/Split Screen PvP, Remote Play Together, Full controller support with DualShock and DualSense, Steam Cloud and Family Sharing. Interface and full audio are in English. Minimum specs are friendly: 64-bit Windows 10, 4 GB RAM, 1 GB of storage.

Solo content is not an afterthought either. Survival Mode throws an endless gauntlet of CPUs at you, Lesson Mode walks through mechanics, characters and combos, Training Mode has the usual helpful options, and a Gallery holds official art, fan art and music. The funky soundtrack is by STEEL_PLUS.

How does the meter work in HYPERFIGHT 2?

The official trailer spells it out in four beats: gain points by landing hits, bet them on special moves, do not get hit back, and win by 5 points or attempt a ring out. The HUD shows a segmented bar per player, so you can read the tension at a glance. It is a risk and reward engine in a tiny package, and it is giving classic arcade honesty with a modern online wrapper.

If your Steam pocket already liked the pixel action climbs in Okko the Exiled or the fist-first speed of Uppercute, HYPERFIGHT 2 keeps the indie craft and the punch, then drops it into a one on one arena. Same appetite for clean feel. Different verb: read your rival, spend wisely.

Night street duel: Shoto Goto vs Vince Volt

One screenshot does overtime for the art direction. A narrow night street in a Japanese city alley. Shoto Goto in a red headband and light blue jacket sweeps a huge cyan crescent slash. Vince Volt, green hair and dark outfit, dashes in low with a ghostly afterimage. Behind them a glowing shopfront with marquee bulbs and silhouetted customers, a side alley with stairs and a little 24h sign. The palette is orange and blue doing a duet. That is the indie fighting game 2026 look I want more of.

Who are the HYPERFIGHT 2 characters?

The Early Access base roster is six fully voiced fighters, mixing favorites from the first game with new faces. The hyperfight 2 characters we can name from the store and launch posts: Shoto Goto, Vince Volt, Yo-Yona, Dr. Kero, and the two launch newcomers DON McRON and FURY ANGEL. Each one has its own Challenges that unlock profile cosmetics, from easy to very difficult.

Zoom into a seaside cafe terrace and the vibe goes full summer. Yo-Yona, orange hair, hoodie and sandals, whips a spiral yo-yo on a long string across the whole screen. Dr. Kero, a frog doctor in a white lab coat, holds his stance on the right. A glossy egg-shaped orb sits on the floor and ring projectiles hang in the air. Round cafe tables, a hand-lettered coffee sign, ocean and puffy clouds. Wild character design, clean readability.

If you want a hand-drawn indie where timing is the whole game, Beat Heart Beat scratches a similar itch with music instead of fists.

What the trailer shows

Our clip keeps three beats of pure play from the official trailers. First, a training stage exchange from the Early Access Release Trailer: a red headband swordsman trades slashes with a green-haired brawler and a pink super slash cuts across the screen. Second, a night street round from the Yo-Yona Reveal Trailer where her yo-yo string reaches across the street at a rival. Third, a karaoke street fight with shield bubbles, ring projectiles and a big red slash. No menus. No logo card. No text overlays.

Is HYPERFIGHT 2 worth it in Early Access?

At $11.69 (list $12.99, 10% intro offer until October 26) for a pixel fighter with rollback netcode and a rule set that is easy to read and hard to master, my verdict is yes if you like one on one games with real decisions. Here is the honest scoreboard as of about 11:00 BRT on October 14. Steam's review score reads Positive. The review API counts 24 positive out of 24 across all languages, zero negatives in that snapshot. joh also posted that the game passed 10,000 wishlists two days before launch.

Know what Early Access means here. joh says the gameplay and netcode are in a rock-solid state but content is not complete yet. The plan is 1 to 2 years in Early Access, more characters, stages and modes, an Arcade Mode with story scenes, and fighting game quality of life features. The base price is planned to increase over time as content lands. No content descriptors on the store, no Horror tag, and no AI generated content disclosure on the store page we checked.

Who should skip it: anyone hunting a huge day-one roster, story mode right now, or console versions. This one wants you in the lab and in lobbies.

Studio check and FGC buzz

@joh_dev is the personal account of the solo dev behind studio joh, about 1.1k followers, and it is very active: launch posts, replies to players about hitbox options, and shout outs to the community. Before launch, FGC creators Diaphone and K7 Showoff tried the game, and joh shared that Diaphone showed HYPERFIGHT 2 in a video after launch. The voice cast and composer are hyping it too. Small studio, real voice, and a store page written by someone who clearly plays fighting games.

Who should pick a fighter

  • FGC regulars who want a fresh indie with rollback and a meter system that punishes greed
  • Couch rivals who want quick local Shared/Split Screen PvP or Remote Play Together nights
  • Pixel art fans who care about sprite craft, palettes and hit effects as much as frame data

HYPERFIGHT 2 is out now in Steam Early Access for Windows and macOS. Pick your fighter. Spend your meter wisely. Do not get hit back.

What the others think

Rollback netcode plus menu lobbies on a solo dev fighter is the clutch part for me. Quick Match, private rooms, Remote Play Together, and a meter you bet on every special. That lobby is gonna get loud.

  • Junno

Deadass the ring out rule is the nastiest idea here. You can be down on points and still toss somebody off the stage for the win. A frog doctor in a lab coat on day one roster, no notes.

Reckon 10,000 wishlists before launch and a clean 24 of 24 by day three is proper tidy for a one person Early Access fighter. Intro price ends October 26, so the calendar is doing the selling.
