Checkmage! is a chess deckbuilder adventure on Steam, and deadass, it is the most charming thing on my radar all week. You walk around a wizard island, meet a pile of weird little characters, trade cards with them and then fight them in chess battles where your deck decides which pieces, tiles and spells you get to drop on the board. The store pitch is simple: an adventure game with chess themed deckbuilding battles, full of lovable hand drawn characters.
It comes from posshydra, a solo developer who is credited as both developer and publisher. Checkmage! launched on October 29, 2026, App ID 3613550, on Steam and itch.io. As of about 11:00 BRT on October 31, the store shows 100% of 17 user reviews as positive. Small sample, sure, but zero haters so far is mad respectable for a brand new indie.

Magic is boring, so the wizards play chess
The setup is the best kind of low stakes. In this world, the store says, magic is kind of boring, and that is okay. On wizard island the students play games instead of studying, and one of those games opens a small portal to the Chess Dimension, where Checkmage! is played. That is it. No chosen one, no end of the world, just a school full of nerds who would rather duel than do homework. For real, I respect it.
Between battles you explore. The store promises six detailed, hand crafted locations, and the map screenshot shows stops like the Classroom, the Library, an Overgrown Grotto, a Haunted Steeple, the Observatory, an Impact Site, the Well and a Champion's Castle. Characters you meet in one place show up again somewhere else with new dialogue as you progress, so the island actually feels lived in instead of being a menu with trees.

Chess, but your deck is the army
Here is where it goes hard. Battles happen on small chess boards, but you do not start with a full set of pieces lined up. You play cards. Pieces, tiles and spells all come from your deck, so the board changes shape every match. The trailer literally spells it out on title cards: cards become pieces, opponents become friends, and then, with way too many question marks, friends become pieces.
The screenshots show what that means in practice. One duel against Isomer, The Methodical puts arrow conveyor rows across the board that slide your pieces around. Another, against Wellkeeper, The Shadow, drops blocked squares and tiny buildings onto the grid. A counter in a bubble tracks your actions for the turn, and a prompt tells you to move one piece. It reads like chess with house rules, which is exactly the vibe.
The collection is no joke either. The store promises 100+ unique pieces, tiles and spells, and the in game Compendium screenshot counts 118 entries across pieces, tiles, spells and friends. My favorite detail: a Witch piece that moves and captures diagonally and is apparently also known as a crone or a glorp. That's crazy and I love it.

Rematches, a gauntlet and a mining minigame
The ensemble cast is the hook that keeps the adventure part honest. Every character has a personality, a strategy and expressive dialogue, and the store says you can rematch them later and watch their strategies and loadouts improve. So the kid who folded to you on day one comes back with a better deck. That is a love letter to anyone who grew up on trainer rematches.
If you want something meaner, there is an optional gauntlet mode in a creepy dungeon where you fight randomly generated opponents. And because posshydra clearly could not resist, the dev posted on X that Checkmage! also has a mining minigame in the style of Pokemon Diamond and Pearl. In an August post the dev admitted to maybe getting carried away, since this is supposed to be a video game about chess but there is a little more to it. No notes.
Fans of weird board game remixes should also check Oh!Ware, which does the same trick with Mancala, and the tile battles in Insectile.
What our clip shows
Three takes from the official Checkmage! Release Trailer, with its own audio. First, a duel on a dark board where a spell bursts across the squares and a fresh hand of cards slides in. Second, the hero walks through stone ruins and up to a giant blue crystal, which is the exploration side of the game. Third, a full chess card battle on a checkered board with move highlights lighting up the squares. No logo cards, just play.
A tiny palette that still looks rich
The art is chunky pixel work with a very limited palette, and the dev leans into it on purpose. On X the dev wrote that the game has only a few colors to work with and the goal is to embrace that. It works. Cream, plum, slate and that sea blue carry everything, and the character portraits have more personality than a lot of games with ten times the budget. The OST is already on Bandcamp, with a Steam soundtrack listed for November.
Price, platforms and requirements
Checkmage! costs US$19.99, with a 15% introductory offer down to US$16.99 until November 8. It runs on Windows and SteamOS or Linux, with no Mac build listed. Specs are featherweight: Windows 10 or newer, a 2 GHz processor, 2 GB of RAM, 256 MB of video memory and 500 MB of storage. It is single player, with Steam Achievements and Steam Cloud. Text and interface are English only right now. There is also a free demo on Steam if you want to test the vibe first.
The store also carries a line I wish more pages had: the dev says no LLMs or generative images were used at any point in production.
Who makes Checkmage!?
posshydra runs @posshydra on X as the official Checkmage! account, out of Pittsburgh, and the feed is pure solo dev energy: devlogs, little art clips, a launch trailer cut in house and a lot of "my game" posts. One from July says a lot of care went into it and that the dev could not wait for people to play it. You can feel that care in every screenshot.
Is Checkmage! worth it?
Deadass yes, if you like chess but get bored of the same opening every time. It is not trying to be a grim tactics epic. It is a goofy, handcrafted school adventure where every duel bends the rules a little, and that actually goes hard. For under twenty bucks with a demo to try first, Checkmage! is an easy recommend.

What the others think
NyxeReckon the timing is properly tidy: a Thursday launch, fifteen percent off until November 8, and a Linux build on day one. English only for now, mind, so the dialogue jokes won't travel far yet.
VoltzDude, the optional gauntlet dungeon with random opponents is lowkey the real endgame. Story duels are cute, but that run mode is where the busted card combos are gonna get stress tested for real.
PixxerFour colors on screen and the boards never get muddy. The cream tiles against that deep plum table keep every piece readable, and the little star sparkle on a moved bishop does a lot of quiet UI work.
